CoVID-19 vaccination rates around the world are steadily increasing and pandemic-related restrictions are loosening. However, many people have grown to enjoy working from home and do not want to work in a traditional office again.

Of course, it is not always practical for organizations to have a fully remote work model. This is where hybrid work fits in! The flexible nature of hybrid work enables employees to work from the office when they need to, but also allows them to work from home or from anywhere else. Plus, hybrid offices help cut down on costs and their innate flexibility enables them to adapt to any situation – including pandemics.

Many organizations have transitioned to hybrid offices now, which begs the question – is hybrid work the new normal of work? Let’s take a look at a few of these organizations to better understand how they’ve implemented this novel way of working in their company structures.

#1: Microsoft has implemented a hybrid office model with the ultimate goal of enhancing flexibility for employees

""

Microsoft’s hybrid office model has six stages, ranging from completely closed to fully open. Due to the variable nature of the pandemic, each stage is defined by data-driven criteria dependent on trends in CoVID-19 cases and deaths, etc. From stage 3 onwards, employees are able to work from the office if needed, with varying levels of regulations depending on the specific stage.

Although Microsoft employees still tend to work from home more often than working from the office, this may be due to not being vaccinated yet, schools being closed, and other such reasons. Regardless, it is clear that a return to the traditional way of working is not supported by employees, and a hybrid office model is likely to remain even after the pandemic is over.

Microsoft is therefore looking into how to make their hybrid office model as effective as possible. For example, new technologies could be introduced, or old ones could be updated to better meet the needs of those who work flexibly.

#2: Google uses a hybrid office model to improve collaboration equity

""

Earlier this year, Google confirmed they would move to a hybrid work model once offices were reopened. After all, they are no strangers to hybrid working – Google Workspace, a combination of G-suite and Google Hangouts that was released last year, is widely used to support remote working across the globe. With the inclusion of new features meant to enhance communication in a secure manner, it’s an extremely useful tool for Google employees and other organizations alike.

One keen advantage of hybrid working is that it enables people to contribute equally and promotes inclusivity. Regardless of location, role, experience level, language and device preference, all Google employees are given a fair chance to do their best and contribute to the overall team. Plus, the lessons Google learns from their hybrid work model can be used to improve their services that we use!

#3: Spotify prefers a hybrid office model to attract greater and more diverse talent

""

With their ‘Work From Anywhere‘ policy, Spotify has allowed its employees to choose where they want to work – from an office, from a coworking space that the company will pay a subscription for, or entirely remotely.

Giving employees more choice over the town, city, or country they want to live in means they’ll be a lot happier at work. They’ll also be more likely to put their best efforts into their tasks. Most importantly, however, it enables a much wider group of talented individuals to work together, by removing the location barrier.

#4: Uber used employee feedback to decide – a hybrid work arrangement was the most popular option

""

After spending months collecting data on how employees felt about working remotely, what sort of work models were comfortable for them, etc, Uber announced their plans for a hybrid office model.

Employees can choose where they want to work 50% of the time and work from the office the other 50% of the time. This balances both employee satisfaction while still enabling open discussions, creative brainstorming, and so on. Employees are also given greater decision on where they want to work from – they can choose a satellite office that’s closer to home instead of having to work from the main office.

#5: Native Union achieved 40% savings on office space with a hybrid office

""

An example closer to home is that of Native Union. With FLYDESK’s support, they were able to quickly replace their traditional office model with a hybrid one. In just one year, they significantly cut down on their costs by truly maximizing their office space. Additionally, the inclusion of flexible work arrangements has greatly improved morale as employees have better work/life balance. If you’re interested to learn more about how Native Union achieved all of this and more, check out our case study.

Now, simply switching to a hybrid office without the necessary support for your employees can result in a disaster. As we saw with Google and Microsoft, systems need to be put in place to ensure that the hybrid office model runs smoothly and that communication between employees is not disrupted. Additionally, it’s important to track how your employees use the available office space, so you can make any adjustments to your work model if necessary.

The FLYDESK App as a unique solution

De FLYDESK-app was designed to support businesses in implementing remote and hybrid work by enhancing communication within the organization. One of its key features is the ability to “check-in” while working, ultimately helping employers better understand how, when and where their employees prefer to work.

Additionally, office space can be booked in advance to ensure there’s enough space for everyone who needs to go into the office on specific days. This means that no one runs the risk of turning up to an office that’s at full capacity. If all the office spaces are booked up, employees have the option of booking an on-demand workspace (hotdesk or meeting room) at The Hive.

With the increased visibility that the FLYDESK App provides for distributed teams, employees will be able to see who is working near them as well as who will be going into the office on specific days. After all, with flexible work arrangements, it’s tough to predict everyone’s work hours! Being able to understand everyone’s work schedules makes it much easier to plan in-person meetings or discussions.

Hybrid work models are clearly here to stay. After all, if the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that we all need to be a little more flexible towards work and life.
